- Decoction : the plants are put into
cold water, or in another liquid element, the whole is boiled during some time (it depends
on the aroma and the virtues of the plants).
- Brandy : liqueurs with alcohol extracted
from the distillation of the wine or saps.
- Elixir : the elixir used to be employed by Greek, Arab and Roman
doctors. It's a liquid medicine composed of several substances contained in the alcohol.
- "Hydrolat" : this preparation can only be made
in laboratory. Indeed you need to use a still which you place in order the water vapours to be
filtered through a layer of plants. Being filtered through them, the vapours get full of the active
powers of the plants.
- Herbal tea :
first of all you boil the water or another liquid, then you add the plants as boiling point is
reached, but without keeping this boiling state, and cover it right after.
- Liqueur : 50% brandy or alcohol with 50% sugar
syrup flavoured with fruit and plants.
- Potion : liquid and sweetened preparation that
you drink at regular intervals. It can be relaxing, tonic, diuretic... It is composed of an active
principle, a liquid, and an aromatic syrup (mint, orange blossoms) to sweeten or to correct the taste.
- Syrup : thick preparation, composed of a
concentrated solution of sugar in water or wine and medical principles. The high concentration of
syrup ensures its perfect preservation.
